Knife threat made in dispute over oven [knife]

A roommate dispute about who would use a shared oven turned criminal when one of the roommates grabbed a chef's knife and told the other, "We're not calling the cops anymore — this is how we're doing it now," according to police. The roommates had recently connected through the online bulletin board Craigslist, Sgt. David Keaveny said.

Charged with a felony count of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, as well as a misdemeanor charge alleging vandalism, is Robert Wilson, 27. According to police reports, Wilson recently moved from the Chicago area to a Langdon Street residence.

An affidavit by officer Erik Widerstrom states that he and other officers were dispatched to 47 Langdon St. at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, when a caller said his roommate "pulled a knife" on him. The caller told police "there had been a dispute about who was using the oven to cook food," during which Wilson removed a pizza from the oven and threw it on a floor, the affidavit states.

Wilson's new roommate took out his cell phone and announced he was going to take video of Wilson's behavior, when Wilson grabbed the phone and threw it on the floor, cracking the screen, according to the police report. Wilson "then reached up on top of the refrigerator and produced a chef's knife," with a 6- to 8-inch blade, while making threats, police allege. A third roommate independently corroborated the allegations, according to Widerstrom's affidavit.

Wilson was arrested on the felony charge, which alleges he placed another in fear of imminent bodily injury by holding a knife while making threats. He also faces the criminal mischief charge that alleges he damaged his roommate's phone by throwing it on a floor. Keaveny said police had recently responded to multiple calls at the same residence for roommate complaints including reports of moved property, a missing computer modem and other "roommate squabbles."

According to Portsmouth Circuit Court records, Wilson was arraigned Wednesday and is scheduled to return to the court Jan. 14 for a probable cause hearing. He is court-ordered to have no contact with the two roommates. Stephen Church, superintendent of the Rockingham County Jail, said Wilson remains incarcerated at the Brentwood jail, unable to post $2,500 cash bail.

Are women hardwired to nest? [knife]

My husband has been working some out of New York City and staying in a corporate apartment when he’s there. We went to visit him during Christmas break and while the apartment was perfectly lovely, I couldn’t believe how little he had in his cupboards and refrigerator. It was truly a bachelor’s apartment.

He had some milk, eggs, cheese, bread, peanut butter, grapes, lettuce, some cold cuts and some spreadable butter but that was pretty much it. What in the heck had he been eating? Was he going out or just not eating at all? (He said the office kept having parties and he was living off of that.)

When he first started staying at the apartment, I had him show me via Facetime what I would have to work with in the kitchen when we visited. There was one fry pan, three pots, one brownie pan, the top to a broiler pan but no under part. There was a coffee maker. The apartment Taming the urban griller only had five sets of cutlery – we needed six because Michael’s brother was also joining us. The knives were sub par. So I packed my favorite knife, a cutting board, a set of cutlery, my favorite coffee and photocopied favorite recipes before leaving.

I shoved into my overstuffed luggage new cozy slippers for him and books to read. I tried to fit in a throw blanket but didn’t have the space.

When we arrived in the city, I hit the grocery store around the corner and stocked up on essentials for cold weather — tomato soup, good sourdough bread for grilled cheese sandwiches, pasta, hot cocoa with marshmallows, and lots of fruit. The only catch is that in New York, you have to be able to carry what you buy. (They do have delivery service for groceries for an extra $5 but I like the challenge of lugging it all home.)

I bought tin foil and disposable foil pans to roast in. With the foil I could turn the broiler pan into a workable cookie sheet for Christmas cookies and rolls and biscuits. I bought pre-made manicotti, added sauce and cheese for a lovely pasta bake with friends after a cold day visiting the Statue of Liberty. I bought a spiral-sliced ham with a pre-made glaze and baked that for Christmas Eve and for sandwiches. I used the ham for breakfast too in cheese biscuits. Then did roast beef two nights later, which lasted several days. I made mashed potatoes several nights with the spreadable butter and half-and-half that I used for coffee.

Why the knife is so effective at reversing Type 2 diabetes [knife]

Jonathan Stelly was 22, a semipro baseball player aiming for the big leagues, when a fainting spell sent him to his cardiologist for tests. The doctor's office called afterward with shocking news: If Stelly wanted to live to see 30, he was told, he'd need a pacemaker.Stelly knew it would be the end of his baseball dream, Knife robber targets cash delivery driver in Staffordshire but he made a quick decision. "I did what the doctor said," he recalls. "I trusted him."Months after the surgery, local news outlets reported that the Louisiana cardiologist, Mehmood Patel, was being investigated for performing unnecessary surgeries.Stelly had another doctor review his case. Then another. And another. They all agreed: He needed blood pressure medication, but he didn't need the pacemaker.Today, Patel is in prison, convicted of billing Medicare for dozens of unnecessary heart procedures. Stelly, now 34, still has the pacemaker - but the doctors shut it off years ago."Baseball was my life, and he took that away," Stelly said. "For nothing."Tens of thousands of times each year, patients are wheeled into the nation's operating rooms for surgery that isn't necessary, a USA Today review of government records and medical databases finds.

Some, such as Stelly, fall victim to predators who enrich themselves by bilking insurers for operations that are not medically justified.Even more turn to doctors who simply lack the competence or training to recognize when a surgical procedure can be avoided, either because the medical facts don't warrant it or because there are nonsurgical treatments that would better serve the patient. In fact, unnecessary surgeries might account for 10 to 20 percent of all operations in some specialties, including a wide range of cardiac procedures as well as many spinal surgeries.Knee replacements, hysterectomies, cesarean sections and even colonoscopies are among the other surgical procedures performed more often than needed, according to a review of in-depth studies and data generated by government and academic sources.Since 2005, more than 1,000 doctors have made payments to settle or close malpractice claims in surgical cases that involved allegations of unnecessary or inappropriate procedures, according to a USA Today analysis of the U.S. government's National Practitioner Data Bank public use file, which tracks the lawsuits.

Casts Kathryn Morris As Lead [knife]

Alice, Sweet Alice remake plans have moved forward in a big way with Cold Case star Kathryn Morris taking on the lead role of Catherine Spages, mother to a little girl, who may or may not be a psycho killer.Morris' production company Revival House and Mosaic Media Group will co-produce this “re-imagining” of the 1976 classic, Tomaselli said.FDA approves return of drug for morning sickness. In the original film, Catherine's youngest daughter (Brooke Shields) is butchered on the day of her first communion. Older sister Alice (Paula Sheppard) is the prime suspect. While Alice certainly has “issues,” however, her parents can't believe she would be capable of murder. Meanwhile, a ghastly knife-wielding figure in yellow raincoat and translucent mask is offing people one-by-one.Are the crimes related? And if Alice isn't the killer, then who is?For those of us familiar with the film, director Dante Tomaselli promises surprises aplenty. In other words, don't think you've got this one figured out just because you've seen the original 100 times.

Tomaselli recently agreed to an interview with The Inquisitr in which he discusses plans for his Alice, Sweet Alice remake, and what it's like to follow in the footsteps of the original director Castle production designer and cousin Alfred Sole.He also discusses the new script, working with a larger budget, where the project's at in development, and whether we can expect Sheppard or Brooke Shields in cameos.Once that was completed I started dreaming of Alice again. Alfred contacted me and said there was a possible investor. This turned out to be a false alarm but I'm glad it happened because it got me to finally work on the script. It put a fire under me. I knew I needed a co-writer so I immediately thought of Michael Gingold, managing editor of Fangoria Magazine. We wrote a screenplay in the past together and it was a terrific experience. So he came on as co-writer and that's when the script was created. Mike brought so much to the table, a natural communicator, a wordsmith — an expert on horror cinema. Needless to say, he was a huge help.

The kitchen rules when it comes to buying a home [knife]

BEST to spruce up your kitchen when selling, it's the room most important to potential buyers according to a new survey. The most important room for women when inspecting a property is the kitchen, while men prioritise the living areas, according to a survey by mortgage broker Loan Market.More interestingly, both men and women agreed that bedrooms are the least signification rooms for them when deciding on whether a home makes the grade.A poll which asked buyers and owners ‘When inspecting a property, which room is the most important to you?' found that 49 per cent of the 612 respondents said the kitchen, followed by 38 per cent for the living area. However, female and male respondents disagreed about which room was the deal clincher; 59 per cent of women chose the kitchen as their first choice while only 37 per cent of men pointed to the kitchen, making it the second most popular option for blokes.
Women found the living area far less important than men with only 24 per cent naming it the key room for an inspection compared to 56 per cent of men.Loan Market corporate spokesperson Paul Smith said these results indicated that buyers don't assess a property on its existing fixtures and features but rather its scope for improvement."Often when a buyer shows interest in a property it's because of the potential they see in certain rooms of the house or unit. Today's buyers have become astute at assessing how much effort and additional money may be required to get the property to that point," he said.
Actually, the work and sacrifice that goes in to both of these establishments are just about the same. They both take a lot of sacrifice and dedication. They take a lot of thought, preparation and execution. Marketing, training and cost controls have become a little easier in opening Medii Kitchen, having had Pepz pave the avenues of these three aspects of the business over the past 10 years. We've spent many years on marketing, research, developing training programs and working with food-distribution companies to help control our costs. We have learned to import some of our own products, as well as cut out the middle man from manufacturers to control and cut back costs. My favorite chef is a guy named Emmanuel Concas at Mercato Trattoria in New York City. He happens to be a well-decorated, four-star Michelin chef. He is actually my best friend, who I can call on at any moment and ask for advice or suggestions--pretty much anything necessary in this industry. His culinary expertise has played a big role in inspiring my vision of Medii Kitchen.

Norwich soup kitchen hearing to be held Tuesday [knife]

The controversial relocation of the St. Vincent de Paul Place soup kitchen moves to the Zoning Board of Appeals Tuesday for public hearings on a variance request to allow the soup kitchen and food pantry to operate in the former St. Joseph's School and a request to overturn the zoning officer's violation notice. The ZBA has moved Tuesday's 7 p.m. meeting to the Council Chambers in City Hall to accommodate the expected large crowd.St. Vincent de Paul Place filed the ZBA applications in February after the Commission on the City Plan in December denied a special permit for the soup kitchen to remain at St. Joseph's after a six-month temporary permit expired Jan. 12. The commission cited testimony by neighbors that the temporary operation was a detriment to the neighborhood, with trespassing, littering and foul language directed at homeowners.
With that denial, Zoning Enforcement Officer Tianne Curtis issued a notice of zoning violation to the facility for operating in the former school.St. Vincent and St. Joseph's Polish Roman Catholic Church, which owns the former school, initially filed a lawsuit in federal court in Bridgeport challenging the planning commission's permit denial, arguing that the soup kitchen was part of the Diocese of Norwich's religious mission and protected by the U.S. Constitution.Kitchen fire sparks road closure in Newton.City attorneys argued that the case should be dismissed, in part because St. Vincent at the time had not filed an appeal to the ZBA for a variance to allow the operation. U.S. District Court Judge Warren W. Eginton is considering the dismissal order.
Last month, Eginton postponed an injunction hearing on a request by St. Vincent to stop the city from forcing the facility to close until the court case has been decided. The city has issued violation orders, but has taken no action to force the soup kitchen to close.Amy's Kitchen ranks among the nation's top brands of natural and organic convenience foods. Its products include frozen entrees, canned soups, breakfast foods, snacks and desserts. The company projects sales this year at $380 million and employs nearly 1,900 people, including 1,000 in Sonoma County. It operates plants in Santa Rosa, near Medford, Ore., and in Corby, England.During an interview last week at their 1870s farmhouse outside Petaluma, the Berliners announced plans to build a second processing plant in Santa Rosa that one day could employ another 800 employees.City officials have applauded that news, saying it would be the biggest company expansion here in at least a decade.

Kitchen fire sparks road closure in Newton [knife]

A kitchen fire in a first-floor apartment shut down Sussex Street Sunday evening, Jan. 6.At about 6:40 p.m., emergency responders were dispatched to the 45-47 Sussex St. residence, closing the road down from Gardner to Pine Street.Newton Fire Chief Brian Fox said a cooking fire evolved into a kitchen fire.A Sussex Street resident said a neighbor living in the same apartment building attempted to put out the fire, triggering an old knee injury. The neighbor was pulled out of the apartment on a stretcher with a smile on his face. The Sussex Street resident would not disclose the man's name.
Andover Township emergency responders arrived at the scene first. Newton Fire Department, Newton Police, Newton First Aid and Lakeland First Aid responded to the incident. Hampton and Fredon fire departments were on standby. But Mr. Burke said that not all employees want to become star chefs. He pointed in the direction of the dishwashers in the rear of the kitchen, "out of the firing line," as he put it. (His own career as a "bad-ass dishwasher" started at a restaurant in New Jersey, where he grew up.) "If they're good, got good hands, show up on time and have a desire to work hard, we have the work for them," he said.Ginger Graves coordinated an lunch to benefit local charities. The chef, whose other restaurants include David Burke Townhouse and Fishtail by David Burke, has also hired three other refugees recommended by the International Rescue Committee. However, he added, "People get a job and lay back. They fear they'll fail. They don't want to go to the next level."
Ah Lun, whose next step up the kitchen ladder will be preparing hot foods, appears unhindered by fear. The restaurant's problem may not be finding opportunities to promote him, but preventing him eventually from leaving, and perhaps, one day even competing with it. "I want to have my own business," he explained boldly. "A restaurant, or maybe other things too. I'm working for other people. I want to be my own boss."Other images are similarly compelling: the repeated inflation and deflation, seemingly by bicycle pump, of the stomach of Maggie Hoffman as Mary Shelley; the treadmill that churns out rubber-stamped words on plastic sheets; the flame-lapped, sheet-covered funeral pyre from which Mary speaks to the world by telephone; and, above all, the stunningly creepy, messy coup de théatre that concludes the show, which delivers big-time on the implicit promise of its title. None of this, let me hasten to add, ever feels slick or, for that matter, entirely professional. Line readings are usually amateur, and even the most artful illusions here call attention to their homemade manufacture. The idea of failure is built into the Radiohole aesthetic. Toward the end the troupe members sing a little ballad (off key, natch) about how they certainly haven't achieved what they set out to, and that they might as well go back to Williamsburg in shame.

Ginger Graves coordinated an lunch to benefit local charities [knife]

Finally, real progress was made when I switched from blender to food processor in the all-important act of de-sliming the long strands of spinach. The short-but-powerful bursts from the blade in my food processor effectively minced the leaves into small-but-visible specks rather than soup.In between the blanching and processing came a bit of sauteing of onions and garlic, and simmering of cream.Ultimately, I was uttering the cry of victory: Voila! That's French for "It's not slimy, the color is good and it tastes marvelous."Taking my screamed spinach to another level is quite simple, beyond that, consider the creamed spinach soup that I'm also providing. It's a great meal in and unto itself:Scrape the creamed spinach into a shallow oven-proof dish and sprinkle with a mixture of grated Swiss and Parmesan cheese (about 1/4 cup of each). Broil until golden and serve.
For a simple make-ahead spinach casserole, whisk 1 lightly beaten egg and 1/2 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, swiss or Monterey jack, for example) into a batch of cooled creamed spinach (may be prepared up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerated). Bake in 350 degree oven until lightly puffed and a thin knife inserted in center comes out relatively clean, about 25 minutes. For a calorie-and-fat-reduced version, substitute milk, light cream or chicken broth for the heavy cream and reduce the butter or oil to 1 tablespoon.Soup for Sharing is back Wednesday afternoon for its third annual lunchtime fundraiser, benefitting Caring Kitchen.
Three years ago, Ginger Graves coordinated an all-soup lunch to benefit local charities, and this year volunteers will be serving up five different flavors of soup from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a $5 donation at Caring Kitchen, the food ministry of Burlington Assembly of God.The charitable event, planned at a time convenient for most working professionals, will be serving potato soup from daVinci's Table and The Village Grill, chili from Mike's Deli, and chicken noodle, black bean, and vegetable beef soup homemade by three volunteering families.Desserts, including doughnuts from Paul's Pastry Shop and a coconut cake from Delancy's Restaurant, will also be included in the $5 meal, as will crackers for soup and drinks.Tickets will be available at the door of Caring Kitchen, located at 903 Tucker Street, Burlington, and diners can either eat at the kitchen or take the meal to go.

Off-Site Kitchen has one of the hottest hamburgers in America [knife]

I love some good burger porn, so Eater's latest edition of the 25 Hottest Hamburgers in America Right Now had me drooling inappropriately at my desk right before lunchtime. The list had it all: garlic aioli, caramelized onions, brioche buns and more luxurious ingredients worthy of the hottest burgers in the U.S. It made my turkey/roast beef/Colby/pepper Jack sandwich sitting in the office fridge seem lame.Fortunately, sitting at No. 9 was Dallas' very own Off-Site Kitchen. So I ditched my sandwich and headed to OSK to try the Locals Only, which Eater recommended.I get that Eater's list focuses on new restaurants that make excellent burgers, as opposed to the best burgers in the country overall. But if this is supposed to be a top 10 most-buzzed-about burger in America, I'm underwhelmed.
There's nothing wrong with the Locals Only, which has mustard, bacon, American cheese and jalapeo. In fact, for the most part, I really enjoyed the burger. It was way better than my sandwich would have been, I'm sure of it.It was of good size, with thick bacon, a medium-rare patty and a near-appropriate balance of ingredients. The only time the burger didn't work in harmony was near the center, when a cluster of five or six jalapeo slices overtook the rest of the flavors.I understand the price point at OSK is a draw; the Locals Only is $4.75. But tack on an order of $2 fries plus tax, and you're already floating above $7 before we start talking about adding a Mexican Coke or can of Pearl.
Looking at Eater's list, I see joints trying to expand the burger game. Places like LA's Grill 'Em All, which has a burger called the Powerslave layered with Brie, bourbon-apple compote, balsamic aioli and greens. Or St. Louis' Five Star Burgers creation, with crispy Hatch chilies, pepper Jack cheese and green chile mayo. Those are some damn sexy burgers that I want to get my hands on.It makes me wonder why Eater chose Locals Only over Off-Site Kitchen's Do It Murph-Style, with roasted jalapeo, smoked bacon relish, a slice of American and some secret sauce.Still, I think I might have had the same reaction. It's like going on a date where, at the end of the night, even though your date was nice and funny and a good conversationalist, there isn't enough spark to merit a second date.Which is to say I think Off-Site Kitchen has some really cute burgers that are totally cool to hang out with, but I'm just not ready to settle down, you know?
